The ESG is a one-time, 30–45-minute endobariatric procedure, where the doctor will reduce the size of the stomach to a small fist or baseball. This procedure serves as a long-term solution for weight loss, given that the patient will be compliant with the wellness protocol while making the necessary lifestyle changes. In the first month, patients can expect to lose 15-20 pounds. The benefits of the ESG procedure include a decreased risk of operative complications, such as bleeding, infections, and bowel obstructions.

ESG Procedure Q & A

What are the benefits of an ESG?

An Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG) is a modern and minimally invasive way to reduce the size of your stomach. Through using the latest FDA-approved equipment and the expertise of our team of board-certified gastroenterologists, this simple procedure can be done without removing any part of your stomach as the traditional gastric sleeve procedures do. This effect not only minimizes how much you can eat but also improves your sense of satiety, so you feel fuller for longer periods. An ESG is also beneficial because it minimizes your risk of serious complications from obesity-related diseases by promoting weight loss.

Am I a candidate for an ESG?

When you visit Endoscopic Wellness Center of America for your ESG consultation, the team will evaluate your entire health history. They will have a detailed discussion with you about your weight loss struggles and help you decide if an ESG is right for you. You may be a candidate for an ESG if:

  • Diet and exercise alone have not been effective for weight loss

  • You continue to gain weight or cannot keep the weight off

  • You are at risk of or have certain chronic health conditions, like diabetes or hypertension

Additionally, while other weight loss surgeries require you to have a minimum Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or higher, the ESG can be recommended if your BMI is 35 or higher.

What happens during an ESG?

An Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty is an outpatient procedure performed under general anesthesia. The goal of an ESG is to reduce the size of your stomach. The doctor first places an endoscope down your throat and into your stomach, which allows them to see inside your stomach by projecting high-definition images onto a monitor. With the help of the endoscope and the latest designed FDA-approved suturing equipment, Dr. Blosser and his team can perform this simple procedure without having to remove any part of your stomach. You can typically go home within a few hours after your procedure, which takes around 45 minutes to complete. The Endoscopic Wellness Center of America will also provide you with detailed eating instructions and meal planning to help optimize your weight loss.
